Google AI Max vs Meta Advantage+: what each one actually takes off your hands

Both platforms now sell the same promise and mean different things by it. Google’s AI Max and Meta’s Advantage+ are both described as automation, but they take over different parts of the job, and confusing the two is how budget ends up in the wrong place with nobody able to explain why.

The clearest way to tell them apart is to ask what each one is allowed to change. AI Max changes which queries an ad can appear for, and optionally the copy and the landing page. Advantage+ changes who sees an ad and increasingly which creative they see. One is expanding the surface a keyword covers; the other is dissolving the audience definition entirely.

What each vendor reports

Google reports 14% more conversions or conversion value at similar CPA or ROAS for advertisers activating AI Max, rising to 27% for campaigns built primarily on exact and phrase keywords. The scoping on that second number is the interesting part: a tightly-keyworded account is one that has been systematically refusing traffic for years, so the lift is largely inventory it had excluded.

Meta’s figures describe a different mechanism. Its retrieval engine reports a 6% recall improvement and an 8% ads quality improvement on selected segments, with a 22% increase in ROAS attributed to advertisers turning on AI-driven targeting.

Google’s own documentation puts the full AI Max suite at 7% more conversions than search term matching alone — most of the gain comes from the matching change by itself.

That 7% is the most useful number either vendor publishes, because it decomposes the headline. Turning everything on adds relatively little over turning on the one thing that matters. There is no equivalent decomposition on the Meta side, which is itself worth noticing.

Where the comparison stops being fair

Every figure above is a vendor measuring its own automation and publishing the result to encourage adoption. None of it has been independently replicated, and none of it can be, because no third party can run the counterfactual inside someone else’s auction.

The one independent number in this piece measures adoption rather than performance: an EMARKETER survey found 57% of US digital ad buyers planning to use AI to assist buying through automated tools such as these. That tells you where the industry went. It does not tell you the industry was right.

On one e-commerce account I run, the two behaved nothing alike when switched on in the same month. The Google side produced a visible jump in query volume within days, most of it genuinely relevant and some of it obvious waste that needed new negatives. The Meta side changed nothing quickly and then slowly outperformed a carefully built audience structure over about six weeks. Same word on the tin, completely different operational experience.

How to choose between them

The honest answer is that this is rarely a choice. Most accounts that can use one can use both, and they are not substitutes: expanding query coverage on search and dissolving audience definitions on social solve different problems. The real decision is sequencing, and that comes down to which input is in better shape.

Automation on either platform is only as good as the conversion signal it optimises toward. If that signal is loose — a form view counted as a lead, a thank-you page reachable without converting — both systems will find the cheapest path to firing it, faster and more efficiently than any human could. The prerequisite is identical on both sides, and it is the step most accounts skip.

AI Max vs Advantage+, side by side

Criterion Google AI Max Meta Advantage+
What it takes over Which queries an ad can match, plus optional headline rewriting and landing page selection Who sees the ad, and increasingly which creative each person is shown
What it leaves you Bidding strategy, budgets, negatives and the creative you pin Creative supply, catalogue quality and the conversion event definition
What it needs from you An accumulated keyword and negative history for the expansion to have something to expand from Volume and variety of creative, plus a clean product feed
Reported lift 14% more conversions, 27% for exact and phrase-heavy campaigns 22% ROAS increase, 6% retrieval recall, 8% ads quality on selected segments
How fast it shows Days: query volume moves almost immediately Weeks: performance separates slowly from a manual structure
Where it loses final URL expansion can route paid traffic to pages never built to convert it, and it will still record conversions when it does removes the audience lever entirely, so a weak conversion signal has nothing left to constrain it and no decomposed reporting exists to diagnose why
Best for mature search accounts with long negative lists and heavy exact or phrase keywords accounts with enough distinct creative to give the retrieval engine real choices

Bottom line. These are not substitutes. AI Max expands which queries a search ad can serve; Advantage+ dissolves the audience definition on social. Sequence by whichever input is healthier, and fix the conversion signal before either, because both optimise toward whatever it says.

Common questions

Should I run AI Max and Advantage+ at the same time?

Running both is normal, because they operate on different platforms and solve different problems. The risk is not interference but diagnosis: changing two automated systems in one month makes any result impossible to attribute. Stagger them by a few weeks so each change has a readable before and after.

Which one delivers results faster?

Google AI Max shows movement within days because query matching changes immediately and new search terms appear straight away. Meta Advantage+ typically takes several weeks, since the retrieval and ranking systems need enough conversion events to learn from before performance separates from a manual audience structure.

Can I trust the lift figures these platforms publish?

Treat them as directional rather than forecastable. Every published figure comes from the vendor measuring its own automation, with scoping language that does real work, and no independent replication exists because nobody outside the platform can run the counterfactual inside its auction.

What has to be in place before turning either one on?

A conversion action that fires once, only on the outcome the business pays for, and carries an identifier the business system also holds. Both platforms optimise toward whatever that signal says, so a loose definition gets exploited faster by automation than by any human buyer.
